a default installation of Forefront TMG always installs a local SQL Server 2008 SP1 Express database for Forefront TMG logging. During the installation of Forefront TMG you have no choice to NOT install SQL Server 2008 Express (note: A ISA Server installation allows the selection of a MSDE installation). The following step by step guide will show you how to change the SQL logging in Forefront TMG to text file logging and how to completly remove the local SQL Server 2008 SP1 Express installation (with exception of a blemish) –  (please read the disclaimer in this document carefully!):
